SaaS<\/a>\u00a0offloads\u00a0hosting, maintenance\u00a0and daily technical operations of IT onto an external provider.\u00a0 SOA<\/a> allows loosely-coupled networked data services to inter-communicate and act as building blocks for consumption by composite applications.
\nBoth of these emerging technologies provide new models for delivering IT and push the world of IT further towards utility computing.<\/p>\n

When combined, SaaS and SOA technologies\u00a0have a powerful synergy.\u00a0 One example<\/a> is what is being done at\u00a0Rearden Commerce<\/a>\u00a0which is billed as the first “All-SOA company”.\u00a0 Rearden built their platform entirely on SOA components and published everything as a service.\u00a0 It is a J2EE stack\u00a0built primarily on top of open source components.\u00a0 They’re providing services to handle operations like setting up meetings and travel bookings and then make\u00a0those services available\u00a0via a\u00a0SaaS model for consumption by applications built by their customers.\u00a0 Sabre and DHL are clients that have signed up with Rearden.<\/p>\n

The power of mixing and matching published SOA services and then\u00a0adding on-demand SaaS availability\u00a0is the fuel behind the success<\/a> of providers like Salesforce.com and NetSuite.com.\u00a0 SOA + SaaS allows customers to quickly create feature-rich composite applications.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mixing and matching SOA services provided as SaaS across various providers opens the door to a lot of challenges.\u00a0 Each service added to an application built on a set of composite services creates a potential point of failure, and the more potential points of failure, the greater the risk that the application will become unstable.\u00a0 That’s where ‘ecosystems’ like Salesforce and WebEx Connect will have an advantage, since all their own and partner\u00a0services will be hosted under the roof of a single infrastructure.<\/p>\n
