SAP<\/a> has one.\u00a0 There’s Salesforce.com’s AppExchange<\/a>.\u00a0 There’s WebEx<\/a>\u00a0Connect.\u00a0 And there’s Progress Software<\/a>.
\nThese\u00a0companies are creating ecosystems<\/em> of enterprise on-demand applications — and they\u00a0are\u00a0all about SaaS and SOA.\u00a0\u00a0While the\u00a0approach taken by these vendors varies significantly in terms of how much control is applied by the infrastructure sponsor, they’re all targeting the creation of\u00a0an environment\u00a0where\u00a0software partners can contribute specialized on-demand applications that\u00a0are\u00a0interoperable with applications developed and offered by other partners.<\/p>\n

The SAP\u00a0ecosytem,\u00a0for example,\u00a0is an expansion of the SAP\u00a0NetWeaver platform, allowing partner solutions to run alongside SAP software.\u00a0 Salesforce\u00a0is building out their ecosystem from\u00a0the user base of their\u00a0highly successful on-demand Salesforce Automation\/CRM system.\u00a0 WebEx Connect\u00a0is seeking to expand on the WebEx\u00a0base of\u00a0two million registered users and 25,000 customers —\u00a0WebEx Connect\u00a0is is based on infrastructure provided by Cordys<\/a>, a startup company founded by Jan Baan<\/a>.\u00a0 The approach taken by Progress is the least restrictive and has no requirements about where partner applications are hosted.<\/p>\n

SOA\/Web Services tout interoperability of services as a key feature, but\u00a0this first generation of ecosystems is developing in much the way as the huge number of social networking sites have evolved, as sets of closed communities that are difficult to communicate between.\u00a0 Applications built for one ecosystem won’t work (or won’t easily work) with the applications developed for a different ecosystem.\u00a0 One advantage of a closed community is the ability to control quality, to test and certify interoperability, for example.\u00a0 But, in effect,\u00a0lack of good interoperability\u00a0still implies a lock-in to a particular platform.\u00a0 Long-term that will need to change.\u00a0<\/p>\n

SAP, Salesforce, WebEx and Progress are all\u00a0are targeting 2007 as a year for expansion and there should be a lot of activity in this area.\u00a0 It\u00a0will be interesting to see where these vendors go and what new ideas evolve from these emerging ecosystems.<\/p>\n
