High speed connectivity has enabled companies to move data form their on-premise computing environments to the cloud and to then access and manage it remotely. \u00a0But connectivity isn’t only affecting business data, it is also affecting how employees work.<\/p>\n

A study commissioned by Cisco <\/a>found that as many as 60 percent of people working globally thought that they no longer need to stay within the walls of their company to contribute and be productive workers. \u00a0Businesses though continue to be wary of this trend. \u00a0Their top concerns are productivity and security issues that arise when people work in \u00a0remote locations.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, and somewhat surprisingly, the response was exceptionally high from workers in Asia and Latin America. \u00a0The numbers were as high as 80 percent in China, 93 percent in India, and 76 percent in Brazil.<\/p>\n

About two-third of all respondents expect that their company should allow them to use any type of device for accessing the corporate network. \u00a0Workers also expect that as new types of devices evolve that those too should be able to tap into the corporate network, for example, car navigation screens or smart television devices.<\/p>\n

While many workers felt that the ability to work from their home or other remote locations provided greater flexibility and better balance between their work and home lives, many workers that do work at home now say that they often find themselves working more hours per day on the job when at home.<\/p>\n

The problem in enabling more remote workers raised in the report surfaced at the IT level where 45 percent of IT workers said that they were unprepared to support the security and other infrastructure that would be required to have large numbers of mobile workers. \u00a0Perhaps, here again, cloud computing has an advantage over on-premise networks with not differentiating between remote or on-premise workers in being able to provide a service.<\/p>\n

The three factors revealed as being the biggest stumbling blocks to enabling more remote workers are security, budget and staff experience.<\/p>\n
