The combination of cloud with mobile computing is shaking up how businesses are or will be run within the next few years. \u00a0A survey of application developers by Tech Trends<\/a> found that about half expect that by 2015 applications will be hosted primarily in the cloud and that most of their development will be focused on mobile devices like smartphones and iPads. \u00a0And from the buyer side, businesses are looking for applications that can run on the new mobile devices. \u00a0The report includes a prediction from IBM that the mobile software category will grow from around $6 billion now to over $30 billion in just a few years.<\/p>\n

The developers aren’t just thinking about games and small app development. \u00a0Traditional software applications that form the bedrock of what enterprises are all about, like ERP, will be accessed via \u00a0mobile devices. \u00a0The problem is that while it is clear that this is the path to the future, many developers are unsure of how to travel the new road. \u00a0And as many as 63 percent of developers felt that their background and skills aren’t sufficient for them to be able to immediately jump into mobile development.<\/p>\n

Developers are also convinced that the cloud is the future of computing for organizations. \u00a091 percent of respondents thought that by 2015 the predominant source for applications in most organizations will be from the cloud. \u00a0Well, predictions can be wrong, but as Jim Corgel, IBM general manager, Independent Software Vendors and Developer Relations said:\u00a0\u00a0“to best understand where enterprise technology is headed, one must pay attention to those who have a pulse on market demands, the developers and IT specialists responding to these demands and creating the next generation of business applications.”<\/p>\n
