Enterprise Information Portals<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0deployed across organizations as tools for centralizing corporate information.\u00a0\u00a0A portal is\u00a0an application framework that functions as a hub\u00a0for accessing both structured and unstructured data,\u00a0holding together content and information drawn from\u00a0very many\u00a0sources both inside and outside the enterprise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Each information source used in a portal is ‘component-ized’\u00a0and\u00a0shrunk into a tiny UI called a\u00a0portlet<\/a> that occupies only\u00a0a small amount of the total screen real estate.\u00a0\u00a0Portlets\u00a0are then mixed and matched together building-block-style to create\u00a0high-relevancy dashboard-like portal applications.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What\u00a0sorts of information can a portlet expose?\u00a0 Almost anything.\u00a0 Corporate Policies and company directories.\u00a0 Data Warehousing<\/a>, Collaboration<\/a>, Knowledge Management<\/a>, and\u00a0 Business Intelligence<\/a> tools.\u00a0 Any kind of information or IT system can be\u00a0molded\u00a0into a\u00a0portlet and then later\u00a0merged into the composite portal application.<\/p>\n

Portals are powerful.\u00a0 They are time-savers because information is consolidated into a central location.\u00a0\u00a0Portals reduce the screen clutter\u00a0of multiple applications running side-by-side.\u00a0 They also offer convenience by letting\u00a0users log into the composite Portal application just\u00a0once,\u00a0and then via single sign-on,\u00a0gain access to\u00a0all component portlet applications.<\/p>\n

In many ways, the mix-and-match construction of\u00a0Portal applications\u00a0parallels the mix-and-match philosophy used\u00a0in constucting mashup applications<\/a>.\u00a0 Because of that, it may not be that surprising to find that Web Services is\u00a0the\u00a0technology that is fueling both of these approaches to building applications today.<\/p>\n

Given a Web Service data source, designing and creating a new portlet is easy.\u00a0 Portlets are often built by mapping data retrieved from a Web Service call into an HTML results-page presentation.\u00a0 The UI for a portlet tends to be simple and easy to build, and the combination of HTML with Web Services provides a clean and natural\u00a0separation of data\u00a0from presentation.<\/p>\n

Once built, standards allow portlets can be easily migrated to different environments.\u00a0 For example, portlets that have been created using standards like those of Web Services and JSR-168<\/a>\u00a0(or JSR-286<\/a>) can be ported to most Portal vendor products.<\/p>\n

Because content and documents have relevance within every domain, it is only natural that portlet integrations with Enterprise Content<\/a> (ECM) and Document Management<\/a> systems are frequent ingredients of successful Portals.\u00a0 Portlets can provide very personalized windows into enterprise content.<\/p>\n

Almost any\u00a0kind of ECM and DM\u00a0functionality can be exposed in portlets.\u00a0 That includes\u00a0support for the life cycle of content and document creation and capabilities like authoring, approval, version control and scheduled publishing.<\/p>\n
