A new prediction from Gartner<\/a> is sounding the death knell for e-mail. \u00a0 They are forecasting that Social Media will be the successor. \u00a0By 2014 they predict that Social Media will become the primary vehicle for communication for 20 percent of the business population.<\/p>\n

Monica Basso, vice president at Gartner, said that “today, social paradigms are converging with e-mail, instant messaging (IM) and presence, creating new collaboration styles. However, a truly collaborative, effective and efficient workplace will not arise until organisations make these capabilities widely available and users become more comfortable with them. \u00a0Technology is only an enabler; culture is a must for success. \u00a0The rigid distinction between email and social networks will erode. \u00a0Email will take on many social attributes, such as contract brokering, while social networks will develop richer email capabilities.”<\/p>\n

Gartner points to big business email platform providers like Microsoft and IBM and see them as preparing to add connections into Social Networks from their email clients. \u00a0Contact lists, calendar items, and messaging clients will be shared across email messaging clients and social networks. \u00a0Smartphones and Mobile are front and center with acting as enablers for this change to come about.<\/p>\n

In 2009 about 7 percent of all email accounts were cloud-based. \u00a0Gartner expects that to rise to 10 percent by the end of 2012. \u00a0 80 percent of the enterprise mobile email software market in 2012 will belong to either Microsoft or RIM.<\/p>\n
