Cloud Computing will provide a boost to Europe’s economy, according to a detailed in-depth report on how cloud computing is positioned to change the nature of business in Europe, commissioned by EMC<\/a>, and researched and written by the Centre for Economics and Business Research<\/a>, a UK think tank. \u00a0The report comes in two parts and is titled The Cloud Dividend<\/a>. \u00a0Part One is available here<\/a>, and part two can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The report found that cloud computing will generate new revenues in EMEA of nearly $1 trillion (\u20ac763 billion)\u00a0spread across years 2010 to 2015. \u00a0And the cloud is a job creator, generating nearly 2.4 million new jobs. \u00a0In particular, distribution channels and the retail and hospitality industries are significant benefactors of the increased growth, and the report expects that by 2015 somewhere between 60 and 80 percent of businesses within these sectors will have adopted the cloud. \u00a0The report is unique in the rigor in which an economic model is developed and analysis and forecast is broken down by regions within EMEA and business sectors.<\/p>\n

Much of the increased revenues from cloud computing is expected to be due to increased efficiency, scalability and faster time to market.<\/p>\n

The report also considers what it calls the efficiency gap that lies between large companies and small and medium sized ones. \u00a0The report finds that currently large companies are about five percent more efficient that smaller counterparts, although my experience in dealing with different sized companies would have led me to think that the efficiency gap would have favored the smaller, typically more nimble and flexible companies.<\/p>\n

The report expects that cloud computing will help smaller companies adopt categories of software that had been out of reach in price. \u00a0Cloud computing enables companies of all sizes to adopt \u00a0quality software at reasonable cost. \u00a0In this way, cloud computing will enable smaller companies to narrow their current gap in efficiency.<\/p>\n
