Storage sales, like almost every other segment of the economy, retreated during 2009 and most of 2010. \u00a0But Gartner is reporting<\/a> that by fourth quarter 2010, storage sales have sprung back and are back on track with sizzling growth. \u00a0Fourth quarter 2010 storage sales are actually the best on record, surpassing the last sales high last seen in 2008.<\/p>\n

The annual market size for 2010 stands at $14.2 billion, an 18.1 percent gain over the 2009 results, and of that, EMC is the major vendor with sales of $5.4 billion.<\/p>\n

Roger Cox, research vice president at Gartner, said that\u00a0“Storage infrastructure modernization, expanded server and desktop virtualization projects, disk-based backup and archiving deployments, new file-oriented applications, and cloud-based service offerings are the engines that are propelling ECB (External controller-based) \u00a0disk storage vendor revenue growth. \u00a0Clearly, IT executives are showing a willingness to invest in new and modern ECB disk storage solutions that address complexity, reduce opex (operational expenditures) and improve utilization while satisfying demanding service-level agreements.”<\/p>\n

In parallel with the Gartner report, IDC <\/a>also released a similar report for 2010 storage vendor sales revenues. \u00a0The numbers from both reports, while not identical, match fairly closely. \u00a0The market share percentages for the top global vendors are as follows:<\/p>\n
