Smart phones and tablets are packed with enough computing power that many people are finding that they are spending less time with their desktop PCs.<\/p>\n

Google recently made a survey of tablet use and tries to see how tablets are changing how people are using computers. \u00a0Tablets are relatively new, yet estimates <\/a>are that over the next two years 165 million tablets will be sold. \u00a0For being around for only a short time, some of the usage statistics<\/a> for tablets is surprising.<\/p>\n

For example, of those users that own tablets, 43 percent spend more time with their tablet than they do with a laptop or desktop, and 30 percent spend more time with their tablet than they do watching television. \u00a0People use their tablets for games, but also activities that traditionally were done using desktop computers, like search and email. \u00a0Tablets are also frequently used for shopping, reading e-books and watching videos. \u00a0Google Mobile ads report that they’ve noticed a 300 percent increase in traffic coming from tablets over the past six months.<\/p>\n

77 percent of people say that once they get a tablet that their use of desktop and laptop computers declines, and already 28 percent of people say that the tablet has become their primary computer.<\/p>\n

Mobile devices are becoming pervasive in their use. \u00a0Another sign of the growing power of mobile is a report by iHS Supply<\/a> that forecasts 1.2 billion wireless devices to be sold this year, and by 2015 more than 2 billion wireless devices are expected to be sold.<\/p>\n

The growing use of mobile is also helping drive the rapid increase in data creation. \u00a0One extimate has it that an average smartphone consumes 24 times the data of a plain voice cellphone, and supersmart phones like Androids and iOS are using 4 times the data usage of regular smartphones, and right now there are 121 million supersmart phones being used.<\/p>\n
