{"id":2163,"date":"2011-05-25T07:00:04","date_gmt":"2011-05-25T15:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=2163"},"modified":"2011-05-25T07:00:04","modified_gmt":"2011-05-25T15:00:04","slug":"security-executives-wake-up-to-the-risks-and-those-that-dont-need-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/security-executives-wake-up-to-the-risks-and-those-that-dont-need-to\/","title":{"rendered":"Security: Executives Wake Up to the Risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A wave of new devices and technology is making the job of enforcing data security a very difficult one. \u00a0Increasingly employees are using their personal devices, especially smartphones and tablets for accessing data from their organization. \u00a0This trend is being called the &#8220;<a title=\"Consumerization of IT\" href=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/enterprise\/2011\/03\/consumerization-of-it-95-of-in.php\" target=\"_blank\">Consumerization of IT<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0 IDC and Unisys <a title=\"Report by IDC and Unisys\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.unisys.com\/files\/2010\/08\/10-0190-CIT-SUMMARY_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report <\/a>that an astonishingly high 95 percent of people have purchased a personal technology device that they have also used for their work. \u00a0Interestingly, only half of employers say that access to corporate data using a personal device is OK.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Spencer Parker\" href=\"http:\/\/www.certain.com\/system\/profile\/web\/index.cfm?PKwebID=0x2541262341&amp;varPage=info\" target=\"_blank\">Spencer Parker<\/a>, group product manager at <a title=\"Websense\" href=\"http:\/\/www.websense.com\/content\/home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Websense<\/a>, a data security company, <a title=\"Spender Parker comments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bcs.org\/content\/conWebDoc\/40253\" target=\"_blank\">commented <\/a>that company IT departments are &#8220;losing access to their data because they&#8217;re putting it onto a device they no longer own or control&#8230; \u00a0It&#8217;s not just phones any more \u2013 it&#8217;s smart devices like iPads. The proliferation of those devices has just gone ballistic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The IDC report found a major disconnect between how employers think their employees are accessing data in the workplace and the reality. \u00a0The report found that smartphones and tablets are used to access corporate data nearly twice as frequently compared to the estimate of their employers. \u00a0And even while company policy may frown on it, employees are generally dissatisfied with the level of support that corporate IT provides to them for using their personal devices.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"InformationWeek on Security in the workplace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/news\/229402461?cid=RSSfeed_IWK_All\" target=\"_blank\">InformationWeek&#8217;s <\/a><a title=\"Kurt Marko\" href=\"http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/authors\/6935\" target=\"_blank\">Kurt Marko<\/a><a title=\"InformationWeek on Security in the workplace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/news\/229402461?cid=RSSfeed_IWK_All\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><a title=\"InformationWeek Security Report\" href=\"http:\/\/analytics.informationweek.com\/abstract\/21\/6854\/Security\/research-2011-strategic-security-survey.html?ticket=ST-454150-SsKiWvkWpk4fJ0u9N5Lu-login.techweb.com\" target=\"_blank\">reports <\/a>that 70 percent of executives are now realizing that personal devices used for work purposes represents a strong security risk. \u00a020 percent say that these devices aren&#8217;t a problem for them just yet but potentially will become a problem in the very near term. \u00a0And the remaining 10 percent of executives haven&#8217;t yet realized the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Company executives are becoming more aware of the potential risks that new technologies are introducing. \u00a0In 2010, 27 percent of CEO&#8217;s and presidents \u00a0were involved in the creation of security policies for their businesses. \u00a0In 2011, that number increased to 34 percent. \u00a0Awareness of security at the top is a good thing, hopefully this is a number that will continue to grow.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
