\u00a0\"Open<\/td>\nOpenID<\/a>\u00a0has been\u00a0in the news\u00a0over the last\u00a0month with endorsements coming from Digg<\/a>, Microsoft<\/a>, Yahoo!<\/a>\u00a0and AOL<\/a>.\u00a0 OpenID<\/a> is a decentralized system for maintaining a consistent online identity.<\/font><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

Using OpenID, people are identified using a URI or URL, much the same way that websites are identified on the Internet.\u00a0 URIs are a core component of how the Internet as we now know it works, and selecting the URI as a user identifier\u00a0provides\u00a0OpenID with a solid foundation.\u00a0 The OpenID URI that a user selects might be, for example,\u00a0the URL to\u00a0their home page or blog.\u00a0<\/p>\n

OpenID\u00a0enables single sign-on and allows you to skip new website registrations.\u00a0 You can login to different websites without having to create new usernames and passwords.\u00a0 Your OpenID can be populated with information about you so that you no longer need to fill out website registration forms.\u00a0 A good introduction to OpenID is given in this screencast<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Your OpenID profile is managed by an OpenID “identity provider” or i-broker<\/a>, and you aren’t limited to a single OpenID profile — you could set up multiple ones with different levels of information.\u00a0 MyOpenID<\/a> is an example of an OpenID provider, but there are many.\u00a0 A list of OpenID providers is here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The number of company endorsements around OpenID over just the past few weeks demonstrates that OpenID is quickly gaining momentum.\u00a0\u00a0Likewise, tools and services are springing up around OpenID.\u00a0\u00a0Some examples include\u00a0a method<\/a>\u00a0from idproxy.net that lets you\u00a0map\u00a0your Yahoo! account to an OpenID, and a FireFox plugin called Sxipper<\/a>\u00a0that lets\u00a0you\u00a0tranparently\u00a0store your\u00a0OpenID.<\/p>\n
