href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=AU8627728T\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> authored by <a title=\"Trevor Clarke\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/trevclarke\" target=\"_blank\">Trevor Clarke<\/a> and <a title=\"Mathew Oostveen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mattoo\" target=\"_blank\">Mathew Oostveen<\/a> investigates the biggest challenges that data center operators are facing. \u00a0The study looked at data centers in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The major pain points of data centers identified by the report, not too surprisingly, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aging Data Centers<\/li>\n<li>Power<\/li>\n<li>Cooling<\/li>\n<li>Security<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report found that many of the data centers in Australia are aging and are in need up upgrades and retrofitting. \u00a0There are roughly 90,000 data centers in Australia with an average age of 7.7 years. \u00a0But the problem of aging facilities isn&#8217;t isolated to Australia. \u00a0In the US, for example, data center facilities average 12 years in age.<\/p>\n<p>Technology for servers and data centers has changed dramatically just over the past few years. \u00a0Many data centers are looking to upgrade, retrofit, and rennovate. \u00a0Owners are seeking to reduce costs and to become more &#8216;green&#8217;. \u00a0As a data center grows in size, typically the power and water consumption of the facility increases. \u00a0Upgrades of existing data centers are not easy though. \u00a0Once built, trying to change or correct physical or site parameters, for example to achieve energy savings, can be very difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Increasingly new data centers are being designed to be optimized based on the location of the facility. \u00a0Some of the parameters in the mix include energy, climate, humidity, and air and water quality.<\/p>\n<p>How are data center efficiencies measured? \u00a0Three common measures of data center efficiencies that are frequently used are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Power Usage Effectiveness<\/strong> (<a title=\"Wikipedia on PUE\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Power_usage_effectiveness\" target=\"_blank\">PUE<\/a>) &#8211; efficiency of power usage at the data center<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carbon Usage Effectiveness<\/strong> (<a title=\"Carbon Usage Effectiveness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreengrid.org\/en\/Global\/Content\/white-papers\/Carbon_Usage_Effectiveness_White_Paper\" target=\"_blank\">CUE<\/a>) &#8211; carbon emissions of an operating data center<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water Usage Effectiveness<\/strong> (<a title=\"Water Usage Effectiveness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreengrid.org\/~\/media\/WhitePapers\/WUE\" target=\"_blank\">WUE<\/a>) &#8211; measures the efficiency of water for cooling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
