In 2010, the worldwide SaaS market was $10 billion. \u00a0And at the current annual growth rate of more than 20 percent, the SaaS market is on target to more than double by 2015 to $21.3 billion, predicts Gartner, Inc<\/a> in a report <\/a>by Gartner analysts\u00a0Sharon Mertz<\/a>, Chad Eschinger<\/a>, and\u00a0Tom Eid<\/a>. \u00a0Worldwide SaaS sales in 2011 are expected to top $12 billion.<\/p>\n

Roughly a third of the SaaS market, $3.8 billion in 2011, \u00a0continues to be in the CRM (Customer Relationship Management) sector that was first pioneered with the SaaS model by Salesforce.com. \u00a0Another third of the SaaS market, $3.3 billion in 2011, is the content, communications and collaboration (CCC) market. \u00a0The remaining third of the market includes a variety of other application types, most notably, ERP at $1.7 billion. \u00a0SaaS-based ERP accounts for roughly 7 percent of the entire ERP market.<\/p>\n

Despite a rash of recent high-profile data breaches<\/a>, the report finds that SaaS applications are overcoming many of the earlier issues with security and that security is not a big as a concern for customers than in previous years. \u00a0In the press release for the report, Gartner analyst Tom Eid said that “Initial concerns about security, response time and service availability have diminished for many organizations as SaaS business and computing models have matured and adoption has become more widespread. \u00a0Usage and vendors’ on-demand ecosystems continue to evolve to provide additional business and technology services, more vertical-specific functionality, and stronger communities of partners and buyers.”<\/p>\n
