Throw another one into Oracle’s<\/a> Fusion<\/a> melting pot of acquisition assimulation.\u00a0 On March 1st, Oracle has announced plans to acquire $3.3 billion Hyperion Solutions<\/a>.\u00a0 With 12,000 customers and 2500 employees in 20 countries, the acquisition isn’t a small one.\u00a0 And this is just one of more than 28 acqusitions that Oracle has made since 2005.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By purchasing<\/a> Hyperion Solutions<\/a>, Oracle<\/a>\u00a0has further jacked up\u00a0up the pressure that they’ve been applying to SAP<\/a>.\u00a0 Many Hyperion customers are also SAP customers, and this purchase brings Oracle closer to them.\u00a0 This move alone is probably not enough to bring any existing SAP customers into the Oracle camp, but\u00a0it’s an effective\u00a0piece of an overall strategy.<\/p>\n

Hyperion Solutions is primarily a Business Integration (BI) vendor.\u00a0 Gartner has Hyperion positioned<\/a> in the Leader Quadrant for Business Intelligence Platforms.\u00a0 But Gartner has also ranked<\/a> them in the Leader Quadrant for Corporate Performance Management.\u00a0 With this acquisition, Oracle repositions itself within those two domains.\u00a0 Hyperion competitors include Cognos, Microstrategy, Business Objects and many others.<\/p>\n

Oracle sees the purchase of Hyperion as a way to diversify its base.\u00a0 Hyperion was a selection that\u00a0recognized it as\u00a0a best-of-breed solution rather than a solution with ties exclusively to Oracle.\u00a0 Oracle’s world-view has widened considerably of late, and it is finding itself working more and more\u00a0alongside of\u00a0solutions that involve non-Oracle databases and applications.<\/p>\n

Marketing and positioning of Hyperion relative to Oracle’s existing products will present a challenge because of a large number of overlapping products.\u00a0 For example, Oracle’s OLAP product Express versus Hyperion Essbase.\u00a0 Hyperion offers Sales and Marketing Analytics and Oracle’s Siebel has similar capabilities.\u00a0 There is also overlap of data integration and reporting tools — Hyperion’s Brio versus Oracle’s newly acquired Sunopsis.<\/p>\n

It looks like the consolidation sprees of 2006 will spill over into 2007.\u00a0 This acquisition will likely put Cognos and possibly Business Objects into play with purchases by IBM\u00a0or SAP.\u00a0 And one might then wonder who could Oracle buy next?<\/p>\n
