No End in Sight to Storage Device Sales Growth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gartner&#8217;s research vice-president <a title=\"Roger Cox, Research Vice President at Gartner\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=54239129&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH\" target=\"_blank\">Roger Cox<\/a> recently <a title=\"Growth of Storage\" href=\"http:\/\/storage.cbronline.com\/news\/ecb-disk-storage-market-grew-116-in-2q11-gartner-090911\" target=\"_blank\">called it<\/a> &#8220;unabated terabyte growth.&#8221; \u00a0The growth of storage and explosion in the number of storage devices and capacities is affecting all industries. \u00a0<a title=\"Steve Wojtowecz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=85847\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Wojtowecz<\/a>, vice president of storage software development at IBM, said that he\u00a0<a title=\"Steve Wojtowecz\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/blog\/btl\/ibm-panel-discusses-tackling-big-data-storage-as-problem-escalates\/57561\" target=\"_blank\">expects there to be<\/a> over a trillion devices connected to the internet by 2015.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Rachel King\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kingrachel\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel King<\/a> of ZDNet described the results of a report from Zogby International conducted on behalf of IBM which identified the following areas where organizations are investing their storage dollars:<\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\n<ul>\n<li>48 percent plan to spend more on virtualization<\/li>\n<li>26 percent plan to spend more on the cloud<\/li>\n<li>24 percent plan to spend more flash memory and solid state technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Gartner report on Storage growth\" href=\"http:\/\/storage.cbronline.com\/news\/ecb-disk-storage-market-grew-116-in-2q11-gartner-090911\" target=\"_blank\">A Gartner report also confirmed this rapid growth<\/a> of spending on storage. \u00a0In 2Q 2011 worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage market grew at a record rate of 11.6 percent to $5.1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Every industry is increasing the amount of data they collect simply because they can, and more data typically can equate to more efficiency, better design, better decisions and better quality. \u00a0One example cited by King is how digital data is revolutionizing businesses is with the movie industry. \u00a0<a title=\"Peter Ward\" href=\"http:\/\/ecmplus.wordpress.com\/2011\/04\/04\/sony-taps-t3-for-content-and-metadata-monetization\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Ward<\/a>, former senior vice president of information operations and content licensing at Sony Pictures, said that to make a single film today requires creating up to a petabyte of data, with the average finished project coming in at around 10 to 20 terabytes. \u00a0Data storage costs are now significant enough that they are looked at when estimating the cost of film production.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
