150 years ago Wendell Philips<\/a>, American abolitionist and lawyer, \u00a0commented that “Revolutions never go backwards.<\/a>” \u00a0There’s a revolution happening right now and Big Data is at the heart of it. \u00a0An excellent new free whitepaper<\/a>, called Data rEvolution<\/em>,\u00a0by CSC <\/a>researchers William Koff<\/a> and Paul Gustafson<\/a>, describes how big data and business intelligence technologies are revolutionizing nearly every industry and changing the world as we know it.<\/p>\n

The CSC report is both interesting and comprehensive in its breadth of discussion. \u00a0It includes a summary and high-level discussion of Big Data technologies and platforms, like MapReduce, Hadoop, and NoSQL, \u00a0and also gives many practical examples which \u00a0illustrate how these new technologies are being applied today. \u00a0Core to the discussion is the idea that much of today’s data is unstructured and “doesn\u2019t fit neatly into the orderly \u2013 structured \u2013 world\u00a0of the past. The challenge of the Data rEvolution is to unite\u00a0and \u00a0process \u00a0the \u00a0data, \u00a0connect \u00a0the \u00a0dots, \u00a0and \u00a0glean \u00a0new\u00a0insights. And, do all this rapidly.”<\/p>\n
