The world has moved into a new era, declared Gartner’s Peter Sonderguard<\/a>, senior vice president of research at Gartner, \u00a0at the Gartner Symposium 2011 held in Orlando in November. \u00a0“This new era brings with it urgent and compelling forces. They include the cloud, social computing, mobility and an explosion in information.”<\/p>\n

In his keynote address for the Symposium, Sonderguard described the increasing power with which technology is influencing societies and culture. \u00a0And he strung together a series of observations that serve as interesting sound bites to describe where technology will be going in 2012 and beyond. \u00a0On-line ITPro <\/a>and CIO articles covered the keynote address.<\/p>\n

“Postmodern businesses don’t spend all their money<\/a> just on customer loyalty programs. They invest in company loyalty to the customer.”<\/p>\n

“Two third of CEOs believe that IT<\/a> will make a greater contribution in their industries in the next ten years than in any prior decade.”<\/p>\n

“Information is the oil of the 21st<\/sup> century and that makes analytics the combustion engine.”<\/p>\n

“The concept of one enterprise data warehouse containing all information needed for decisions is dead.”<\/p>\n

“Multiple systems including content management, data warehouses, data marts and specialised file systems tied together with data services and metadata will become the logical enterprise data warehouse. \u00a0The impact of these forces will make architectures of the last 20 years obsolete.”<\/div>\n

“This year 350 companies will each invest more than $1 billion in IT. \u00a0They are doing this because IT impacts their business performance.”<\/p>\n

“Together they [mobile devices] force the issue \u2013 they drive us to create the post-modern business, drive simplicity and force creative destruction.”<\/p>\n

“Our industry spent two decades designing around the desktop, but you see mobile computing is not a coming trend, it already happened.”<\/p>\n

“With 1.2 billion people on social networks, that is nearly one-sixth of the world\u2019s population, social media is now in its next phase.”<\/p>\n

“IT leaders must immediately incorporate social software capabilities throughout their enterprise systems.”<\/p>\n

“Today’s IT professionals are reshaping the way global politics works and the way the global economy develops.”<\/p>\n

“The second recession is about to hit and CIOs must decide which way to turn.”<\/p>\n
