Market share is typically measured market share in terms of new license revenue and sometimes includes revenues from updates, subscriptions, hosting, technical support and maintenance.\u00a0 In the rankings, where does that leave Open Source database products like MySQL?\u00a0 Nowhere.<\/font><\/p>\n

Gartner<\/font><\/a> and <\/font>IDC<\/font><\/a> reports show the top five vendors to be Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, Teradata and Sybase.\u00a0 But the ranking is deceptive.\u00a0 With the wave of Open Source product popularity, free downloads of MySQL are powering OS products like SugarCRM, Alfresco, and Joomla.\u00a0 But these deployments go uncounted because MySQL sees no revenues from many of those users.<\/font><\/p>\n

An Evan Data\u0092s <\/font>survey<\/font><\/a> finds that 40 percent of enterprise developers have used or are deploying the MySQL database.\u00a0 MySQL is a standard component of the LAMP OS environment \u0096 Linux, Apache Web Server, MySQL, and PHP.<\/font><\/p>\n

In February, Open Source Ingress <\/font>announced<\/font><\/a> a product that they\u0092re calling <\/font>IceBreaker<\/font><\/a>.\u00a0 Ingress was spun off as an Open Source company from CA in 2005.\u00a0 IceBreaker creates an integrated Stack that includes the Linux and the Ingress enterprise database components.\u00a0 An install of IceBreaker installs both the OS and database in a single step.\u00a0 The integrated stack shrinks the task of maintenance costs over the lifetime of the system.\u00a0 Ingress is calling IceBreaker a \u0091soft appliance\u0092 that can be installed on any hardware.\u00a0 Ingress plans to build more specialized appliances built on top of the IceBreaker platform, addressing verticals like email and reporting.<\/font><\/p>\n

These Open Source RDBMS products are squeezing the traditional software vendors.\u00a0 It is no wonder that both Microsoft and Oracle are pursuing the revenue streams of higher-end applications as the RDBMS becomes more of a commodity item.<\/font><\/p>\n
