Refrigerators that can report their food-stock inventory<\/a>, thermostats that self-regulate<\/a> based on your habits and routines, basements that tweet <\/a>you when they flood. \u00a0These are the kinds of things that an emerging technology called the Internet of Things (IoT) is promising to enable. \u00a0And these three examples are all things that are already available as ‘early-adopter’ products today.<\/p>\n

Interconnecting devices with people and other devices via the internet is just one branch of an areas being called \u00a0Machine-to-Machine (M2M) and Machine-to-Machine-to-Human (M2M2H) communication.<\/p>\n

One area where IoT is increasingly being applied is with smart buildings. \u00a0IDC Energy Insights estimates that the global Smart Building market was $3.1 billion in 2010 and is expected to grow to $10.2 billion by 2015.<\/p>\n

An IBM report on Smart Technologies in buildings<\/a> said that\u00a0\u201cbuildings consume 42 percent of all energy worldwide; energy costs represent about 30 percent of a building\u2019s total operating cost\u2014 up to 50 percent of energy and water are often wasted. By 2025, buildings will be the number one consumer of energy in the world. \u201d \u00a0One of the goals of smart buildings to to better regulate their consumption of energy.<\/p>\n

IBM has started an initiative called Smarter Buildings and they see a growing demand for smarter buildings and cities.<\/div>\n
Dave Bartlett<\/a>, Vice President at IBM, made five predictions<\/a> about how this technology will affect us.<\/div>\n
