IDC’s annual report on the growing size of the digital universe<\/a> has been snowballing in recent years. \u00a0Digital photos, video and sensor technologies account for a sizable amount of that growth. \u00a0In the business world, companies are collecting big data sets of information cataloging and classifying the needs and thoughts of their target market of customers. \u00a0Sources of much of this new business data is being collected from virtual computing, mobile devices and social media.<\/div>\n

It’s not that much of a surprise then when businesses listed their top IT priorities for 2012, managing and controlling data growth and storage came up as the number one priority. \u00a0This was followed by network and equipment, disaster recovery, applications\/software, data backup and recovery, and backup of virtual server environments. \u00a0This is the results of a survey published by CommVault<\/a> in December.<\/div>\n

While it’s unlikely that data volumes managed by companies will go down, businesses are attempting at least to try to ratchet down the rate at which data is \u00a0being collected, and if possible, try to reduce the unnecessary storage of data. \u00a0To do that, they are considering ways to cut back on their storage of redundant or unnecessary data. \u00a0 Some companies are revisiting the principles of Records Management, reviewing their data retention policies and trying to understand when data can be deleted because it is no longer required to be retained or because it is simply no longer useful.<\/div>\n

But managing the growing data volumes will be a hard task. \u00a0Most IT budgets will see only modest increases, if any, in 2012. \u00a032 percent of IT groups reported plans to increase their budgets, while 50 percent indicated that it would be unlikely that there would be any change over their spending levels from 2011. \u00a043 percent of IT budgets are spending 10 percent or less of their budget on data management while 34 percent of IT groups spend between 11 and 20 percent of their budgets.<\/div>\n

Most IT organizations are also making do with their existing staff. \u00a054 percent report that they have no plans to hire additional staff members. \u00a0Only 16 percent of organizations say that they plan to increase their IT staffing levels.<\/div>\n
