Google dominates Internet search and every month the lead seems to only grow.\u00a0 Last week Hitwise<\/a>\u00a0reported that Google’s market share grew to 64 percent — up 6 percentage points from last year, while Yahoo slipped slightly to 21.3 percent and Microsoft down to 9.2 percent.<\/p>\n

But there is no clear winner in the Enterprise Search market yet.\u00a0 Last week<\/a> at the Gilbane conference in San Francisco, Microsoft group product manager for Enterprise Search Jared Spartaro\u00a0was on\u00a0stage alongside of Google product manager for Search Appliances Nitin Mangtani.\u00a0 Joking about the tight competition, Mangtani faked throwing a punch at Spartaro while on stage.<\/p>\n

Microsoft described three distinct environments and different Search market needs:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Consumer\/General Search<\/li>\n
  2. Middle-Market with a combined General\/Enterprise search need<\/li>\n
  3. High-End Enterprise search like that needed for eDiscovery<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Enterprise Search is different from Search on the Internet.\u00a0 Google’s famous PageRank<\/a> algorithm just doesn’t work in that environment.\u00a0 While Google is the current leader in General Search, Microsoft says that they and Enterprise software companies like SAP and Oracle stand a better chance of winning in the other two categories.<\/p>\n
