Most analysts are convinced that companies have moved or are moving to the cloud in a big way. Forrester<\/a> says that sometime this year we will have reached the point where 50 percent of companies are using some form of SaaS. \u00a0The Yankee Group<\/a> says that 41 percent of large companies already have or will deploy Platform as a Service technology in the next 12 months. \u00a0VMWare and the Cloud Industry Forum<\/a> (CIF) estimates cloud adoption to be at 48 percent of businesses in the UK.<\/p>\n

But there are others who say that there’s too much hype around a technology that isn’t fully baked, and that if these adoption rates are real, things are moving too quickly and adopters are headed for big problems. \u00a0But some think that the adoption estimates from vendors and analysts are skewed to the extent that they don’t give a true picture of how the cloud is actually both perceived and used by companies, especially relative to core mission-critical applications that house sensitive data.<\/p>\n

A report by Wisegate<\/a> found, for example, that 50 percent of organizations think that the cloud is still too risky for handling most data and are only comfortable with using it for ‘commodity’ applications like CRM and email.<\/p>\n

The Wisegate report quotes one government agency IT manager as saying that “\u201cEven with Software-as-a-Service, we\u2019ve had lots of stumbles early on. In particular, not having an identity management federation strategy in place has proven to be a pain point.”<\/p>\n

Sara Gates<\/a>, Founder and CEO of Wisegate, said that “although cloud computing has been hyped as a silver bullet solution by vendors and others benefitting from the craze, barriers to adoption exist.”<\/p>\n
