There’s an incredible amount of innovation going that include announcements like Microsoft’s SilverLight<\/a>, Sun’s JavaFX <\/a>and Adobe’s Apollo <\/a>and Flex2<\/a>.\u00a0 There’s even some excitement happening in the world of CAD, and Adobe is driving the change too.<\/p>\n

Adobe is calling their CAD viewing extensions in their Acrobat products Acrobat 3D<\/a>. This isn’t a new product from Adobe, but it’s been significantly updated and there is a new release now in preview. Acrobat 3D extends the universally accepted PDF file format.\u00a0 It allows 3-dimensional CAD model data to be embedded and viewed within PDF files.<\/p>\n

With Acrobat 3D you can take a model created using a standard CAD software package, compress the data as much as 150 times and then include it as part of a PDF file that can be viewed, marked-up and measured using the free Adobe Reader product.<\/p>\n

Acrobat 3D also can be used as a CAD conversion tool. After moving the data into the Acrobat 3D PDF format, it can then be exported into a neutral file format (STEP, IGES, and ParaSolid) that can then be read by nearly any CAD or CAE application.<\/p>\n

With Acrobat 3D it is now easy and cheap to exchange, share and collaborate on design data with anyone else inside or outside the enterprise. A big advantage is that CAD data can be consistently viewed by anyone.<\/p>\n

The CAD range of file formats supported is fairly complete and includes Catia V5 R17, UGS NX4, Pro\/E Wildfire 3, Ideas 12 and Solidworks 2007.<\/p>\n

Using Adobe 3D can dramatically cut the number of copies of some high-end CAD tools that might be needed within a company and it greatly expands the audience of who has access to view the CAD models. Now the engineering designs are available not only to the design team, but also to production, marketing and even sales members.<\/p>\n
