With all the hype around Big Data, you’re no doubt anxious to get some hands-on experience with this new technology. \u00a0The fact is though, you’ve already been extensively using Big Data Applications (BDAs) for some time. \u00a0 Salesforce.com, Linkedin, Amazon, and even Google’s Search are SaaS-style applications that aggregate and manage truly massive amounts of data. \u00a0If you’re using these apps, you have Big Data at your fingertips. \u00a0Web and SaaS applications are colliding head-on with the capabilities of Big Data, and the result is a new generation of web software. \u00a0But the problem remains that there’s still a long ways to go until Big Data is used in mainstream enterprise applications.<\/p>\n

(IDC) predicts that the Big Data market<\/a> will grow from $3.2 billion in 2010 to $16.9 billion in 2015. \u00a0Much of the market today though is still centered around low-level data management tools. \u00a0But gradually the market will expand to eventually\u00a0include pre-packaged Big Data solutions that target specific problems. \u00a0Turnkey or rasily configurable systems that address specific business problems are what people are looking for.<\/p>\n

On TechCrunch<\/a>, Raj de Datta<\/a>, CEO at BloomReach, wrote that Big Data is redefining web and SaaS applications. \u00a0De Datta said that\u00a0“Just as SaaS and the cloud completely revolutionized the way businesses operate, so will Big Data applications (BDAs). BDAs are web-based applications that interpret and use massive amounts of enterprise and web-scale data to deliver more intelligent results for their subscribers. BDAs leverage the best of the cloud; they\u2019re web-hosted, multi-tenant and use Hadoop, noSQL and a range of recommendation and machine learning technologies.”<\/p>\n

Mike Olson<\/a>, CEO of Cloudera, siad that “The major obstacle to mass adoption of Hadoop among mainstream companies is that there aren\u2019t enough applications out there that make it easy to do analytics atop Hadoop. We\u2019re starting to see them pop up now, but it\u2019s still early days and, presumably, the killer application is still to come.”<\/p>\n
