After a year of consolidating\u00a0Macromedia <\/a>assets, Adobe<\/a> is beginning to move forward aggresively with their FLEX<\/a> product.\u00a0 Yesterday they announced<\/a> an updated FLEX<\/a> 2.0 with a much more attractive pricing model.<\/p>\n

As an Adobe Solution Network Developer member<\/a>, this announcement was of great interest to us at Formtek<\/a>.\u00a0 With the global acceptance of Adobe’s PDF<\/a> file format for document exchange, Adobe is similarly\u00a0positioning FLEX as the next-generation standard for delivering Internet applications.<\/p>\n\n\n

FLEX is Adobe’s answer to\u00a0developers for creating high-performance browser-based applications categorized as Web 2.0<\/a>.\u00a0 It provides Visual-Basic-like development tools for quick development of Rich Internet Applications<\/a> (RIAs).<\/font>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

There’s a lot to like about FLEX.\u00a0 Maybe at the top of the list is its visual appeal.\u00a0 It is possible to create browser applications with FLEX that are more similar to the look and interactivity of standard thick-client applications than\u00a0those that are based on HTML and Javascript presentation alone.<\/p>\n

What makes\u00a0FLEX especially attractive is the ubiquity of the Adobe Flash Plugin that FLEX applications are deployed to.\u00a0 Microsoft\u00a0is considered to have\u00a0a monopolistic 85% of browser market share, give or take 5%.\u00a0 But consider Flash.\u00a0 Nearly all browsers support<\/a> the Flash plugin, and almost everyone’s browser already has it installed.\u00a0 With the near total availability of Flash, there is a single\u00a0platform that can be developed for that will allow applications to behave and render consistently.<\/p>\n

The problem with FLEX has been the fact that it’s proprietary and not free.\u00a0 With yesterday’s announcement of FLEX 2.0, that still remains true, but it’s more attractive than before.\u00a0 The FLEX SDK is now available for free.\u00a0 That’s a good start, but FLEX still comes with costs.\u00a0 The FLEX IDE plugin for Eclipse run $499 (and $749 with Charting capabilities).\u00a0<\/p>\n

But it is the middleware component where there is a steep cost.\u00a0 The FLEX Data Services<\/a> — FLEX middleware that provides high-performance synchronization of data\u00a0and handling large data sets — comes free for a single CPU, but when scaled up to multiple CPUs is $20,000<\/a> per CPU plus maintenance and support.<\/p>\n

Adobe is saying that FLEX complements AJAX technology, but it is more acurately positioned as a competitor.\u00a0 The market for RIA development has taken off over the last 18 months with Google’s introduction of Google Maps<\/a> and GMail<\/a>.\u00a0 Google’s creative use of Javascript has reignited interest in Javascript and really created the space\u00a0that everyone has been\u00a0calling ‘AJAX’.<\/p>\n

But a\u00a0major problem with Javascript AJAX is that browser implementations of the Javascript language aren’t consistent.\u00a0 The code is brittle.\u00a0 And testing and developing applications across many browsers and browser versions is a huge task.\u00a0 AJAX development tools are becoming available to simplify that task, but they too usually come with a partial list of the total subset of possible browsers and versions.<\/p>\n

Google has done a great job creating their internet applications based on Javascript AJAX.\u00a0 And that has really stoked interest in AJAX.\u00a0 Google even provides a free Web Toolkit<\/a> for building AJAX applications that allows developers to write and debug client interfaces using Java — the clients are deployed in HTML\/Javascript.<\/p>\n

FLEX offers a compelling alternative to AJAX RIA development.\u00a0 Technically it is superior.\u00a0\u00a0 It supports a wider range of browsers and browser versions.\u00a0 The issue remaining for wide-spread acceptance is its proprietary nature and steep middle-tier cost.<\/p>\n
