Currently about 7 percent of all consumer content is stored in the cloud. \u00a0Gartner says<\/a> that this is changing rapidly and that by 2016 36 percent of all consumer data will be stored in the cloud. \u00a0A key factor in driving this change is the connectivity between devices like smartphones and tablets with the cloud. \u00a0 The average storage of each household will grow from 464 gigabytes in 2011 to 3.3 terabytes in 2016.<\/div>\n

The Gartner report looked at digital content being stored by consumers in PCs, smartphones, tablets, and the cloud. \u00a0They estimate that consumer storage needs will grow from 329 exabytes in 2016 to 4.1 zettabytes in 2016. \u00a0The largest growth in stored data will be from consumers located in North America and Western Europe. \u00a0Most of the data that will move to the cloud will be photos and video which are \u00a0stored by Social Media sites like Facebook.<\/div>\n

Shalini Verma<\/a>, principal research analyst at Gartner, said that\u00a0“Historically, consumers have generally stored content on their PCs, but as we enter the post-PC era, consumers are using multiple connected devices, the majority of which are equipped with cameras. This is leading to a massive increase in new user-generated content that requires storage. \u00a0With the emergence of the personal cloud, this fast-growing consumer digital content will quickly get disaggregated from connected devices… \u00a0Local storage will become further integrated with home networking, presenting opportunities for local storage providers to partner with home networking and automation service providers,\u201d Verma added. \u201cCloud storage will grow with the emergence of the personal cloud, which in turn will simplify the direct-to-cloud model, allowing users to directly store user-generated content in the cloud. As storage becomes a part of the personal cloud, it will become further commoditized. Therefore, online storage and sync companies need to have a strategic rethink about their future approach.”<\/div>\n
