Oracle’s relational database has a lot of competitors, but it is still considered to be the best. And bolstered by a variety of acquisitions, Oracle is pretty strong across a wide range of business application categories.<\/p>\n

But choosing Oracle isn’t cheap. Oracle RDBMS software lists at $40,000 per CPU compared with Microsoft’s SQL server at $25,000 per CPU. And Open Source options are much much cheaper.<\/p>\n

MySQL has done a comparison of the total cost of ownership of a database system for three years. They calculate <\/a>that an Oracle system can set you back $768,000. A MySQL system can be operated at a 90% savings.<\/p>\n

Oracle’s cost has got some customers thinking that it may be time to look at other options. A survey by searchoracle.com of 683 IT professionals at companies using Oracle found that 48% of them are considering lower-cost alternatives. Of those that are considering other options, 73% say that Oracle’s cost is the main reason for evaluating options. Others have issues with Oracle’s ease of use, support and functionality.<\/p>\n

Other users say that you get what you pay for and that Oracle’s quality of services and support is hard to match. But as might be expected, some disagree.<\/p>\n

As with anything, before buying, carefully check and compare before making a decision.<\/p>\n
