Developers and managers know that SOA can provide a very compelling architectural design, at least on paper, but in practice, they’ve found that it is not without pain.

SOA challenges can come at many levels that include governance, testing, configuration, version control, metadata management, service-level monitoring, security, and interoperability. With so many challenges spread across so many facets of the enterprise, disillusionment can set in.

A mid-2006 Gartner survey found that SOA didn’t produce the cost savings that people had expected. And 32% of the respondents even said that implementing SOA resulted in some or significant negative cost impacts.

In an effort to stoke back up some of the excitement around SOA again, the Butler Group revisited the basics of SOA and and listed benefits of the architectural approach:

SOA encourages the extremely cost-effective reuse of business logic

Initial SOA implementation may not show significant cost benefits when compared to earlier implementation methodologies. Cost savings kick in on second, third and fourth projects when component reuse is possible.

SOA has been successful in projects that involve “business process management, composite applications, application integration, event-driven processing, mashups, B2B partner connectivity, redundant application removal, business process outsourcing, and provision of enhanced real-time information”

But if these are the only benefits, then there is a problem. In a single word, the Butler Group finds the main benefit of SOA to be reuse. They go on to say that SOA “delivers a capability level rather than a specific benefit”, and that it is up to the technology side of the house to convince the business side of the benefits of the approach.

That’s not to say there is anything wrong with SOA. SOA clearly has momentum and mind share, and it is rapidly achieving adoption across many businesses. But both IT and business executives need to recognize that SOA is not a panacea. Like any other technology, it can be complex and planning and good execution are vital for success. And on the business side, executives are also coming to realize that SOA is not a business strategy but an IT implementation methodology.

<div
