{"id":3253,"date":"2012-09-21T07:00:12","date_gmt":"2012-09-21T15:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=3253"},"modified":"2012-09-21T07:00:12","modified_gmt":"2012-09-21T15:00:12","slug":"business-intelligence-self-service-bi-is-still-a-long-ways-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/business-intelligence-self-service-bi-is-still-a-long-ways-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Business Intelligence: Self Service BI is Still A Long Ways Off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Business Intelligence is high on the radar at most companies. \u00a0Gartner says that businesses rank BI as their highest priority in 2012, and IDC is forecasting that the BI market will reach $39.9 billion in 2012. The current trend in Business Intelligence is what&#8217;s being called &#8216;self service&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The idea behind &#8216;self service&#8217; is that Business Intelligence is best carried out by users empowered with analytic tools that enable them to independently explore and generate reports from their data sets. \u00a0Forrester and Gartner were among the first to identify self-service as an important BI trend. \u00a0Most BI vendors have jumped aboard and are now trying to \u00a0market their products as easy-to use self-service tools.<\/p>\n<p>Forrester Research&#8217;s <a title=\"Boris Evelson bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/in\/bevelson\" target=\"_blank\">Boris Evelson <\/a><a title=\"Forrester on Self-Service Business Intelligence\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.forrester.com\/boris_evelson\/12-06-12-self_service_bi\" target=\"_blank\">outlines three reasons<\/a> why the self-service approach to Business Intelligence is inevitable:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Analytic requirements for Business Intelligence are often a moving target. \u00a0In the past, IT acted as a middleman and implementor of new requests for business intelligence. \u00a0But IT can never keep up with the pace of requests from users, and BI features were often outdated once they finally were rolled out to the user.<\/li>\n<li>Users don&#8217;t know what they want until they see it. \u00a0And because of that, interacting with Business Intelligence often requires an iterative &#8216;what if&#8217;. \u00a0And that doesn&#8217;t mesh well with traditional software approach to BI that demand clearly stated up-front requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Business users and IT often work to different schedules and priorities, and the difference in perspective between the two teams means that business users aren&#8217;t always happy with how and when features are implemented in the software.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">A <a title=\"LogiXML report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.logixml.com\/LogiXML-2012-BI-Survey-Results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report by LogiXML <\/a>captured the strained relations between IT and business users in companies where tradtional BI projects still were being performed. \u00a0In those project, 90 percent of IT said that users didn&#8217;t have a clear understanding of BI, that they were uninformed, helpless and even hopeless. \u00a076 percent of IT said that users typically assumed that IT had &#8216;telepathy&#8217; when implementing user requests.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a title=\"Ken Chow bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/in\/techmarketingleader\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Chow<\/a>, CMO, LogiXML, said that &#8220;Our survey data suggests that most IT professionals believe that users of BI are or would be dead in the water without IT\u2019s help on BI projects. This notion may be indicative of companies still employing traditional, old-school BI approaches and systems, or that certain desktop BI technologies and vendors simply aren\u2019t delivering on their promise of easy-to-use, self-service BI. Whatever the reason, it appears that we aren\u2019t yet at a time when BI users are not dependent on IT for their BI needs.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
