Data: Big Interest, but Uncertainty in How to Use It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do the IT and business managers of large data-intensive projects think about Big Data? \u00a0<a title=\"Treasure Data survey on Big Data\" href=\"http:\/\/www.treasure-data.com\/whitepapers\/download\/survey\" target=\"_blank\">Treasure Data<\/a> wondered the same thing and surveyed 243 IT and business managers, asking them about their plans and thoughts for how to deal with Big Data.<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that there is broad interest in the Big Data technology, but Big Data still isn&#8217;t widely understood, and many are scratching their heads as to how they might be able to take advantage of the technology. \u00a0Only a quarter of the businesses reported having active projects that are attempting to use Big Data:<\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>24 percent<\/strong> see value in Big Data and are actively working on projects related to Big Data<\/li>\n<li><strong>33 percent<\/strong> think that Big Data could be useful, but they&#8217;ve not actively begun to investigate it<\/li>\n<li><strong>23 percent<\/strong> think Big Data is interesting and are thinking about how it might be applied<\/li>\n<li><strong>10 percent<\/strong> think that Big Data is interesting, but don&#8217;t see how it could be applied<\/li>\n<li><strong>3 percent<\/strong> think that Big Data is just the latest industry fad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among those surveyed, traditional data warehousing and data analytics were viewed as more costly and complex compared to the use of newer tools built specifically for Big Data. \u00a0But that&#8217;s not to say that Big Data is considered to be straight forward. \u00a0Hadoop, in particular, is cited as a hurdle of complexity to overcome when taking on Big Data. \u00a0A\u00a0big advantage that traditional tools have over newer ones is that they are considered to be more secure.<\/p>\n<p>Of the active Big Data projects, the sources for the data being used include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>77 percent<\/strong> &#8211; structured application data<\/li>\n<li><strong>69 percent<\/strong> &#8211; application, system and web server logs<\/li>\n<li><strong>54 percent<\/strong> &#8211; public internet data<\/li>\n<li><strong>48 percent<\/strong> &#8211; subscription service data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report also found that the most common ways (75 percent) for presenting Big Data results are with reports and dashboards.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a
