Workplace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.equities.com\/news\/news-headline-story?dt=2012-10-02&amp;val=544732&amp;d=1&amp;cat=headline\" target=\"_blank\">said <\/a>that &#8220;Social is the new normal \u2013 people expect social capabilities [on the job] to help them collaborate with their co-workers and connect with timely knowledge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Social Software in the Workplace report by Gartner\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jivesoftware.com\/resources\/analyst-coverage\/register-gartner-mq-2012-ssiw\" target=\"_blank\">Gartner defines<\/a> the following characteristics of Social Software being used in the Workplace:<\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\n<ul>\n<li>Find out about each other personally or professionally<\/li>\n<li>Discover other people with common interests<\/li>\n<li>Mine networks of contacts and acquaintances for advice, references and referrals<\/li>\n<li>Form teams, communities or informal groups, and invite external participants from other organizations<\/li>\n<li>Work together on the same work objects<\/li>\n<li>Discuss and comment jointly on work<\/li>\n<li>Organize work from a mutual perspective<\/li>\n<li>Helps users identify relevant work<\/li>\n<li>Alert users to information or events that might be relevant to them<\/li>\n<li>Learn from others&#8217; expertise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gartner organized vendors in the Workplace Social Software (WSS) space into the following four quadrants:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leaders<\/strong>: Jive Software, IBM, Microsoft, Yammer (Microsoft), Salesforce<\/li>\n<li><strong>Challengers<\/strong>: Tibco Software, VMWare, Atlassian<\/li>\n<li><strong>Niche Players<\/strong>: OpenText, Saba, Socialtext (Bedford Funding), Huddle, Bluekiwi (Atos), Igloo, Novell, Liferay, Moxie Software<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visionaries<\/strong>: Telligent, Cisco, SuccessFactors (SAP), Acquia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div
