Too much process improvement can lead to a drop in innovation? That’s the finding of an article titled Six-Sigma Journey to Oblivion<\/a> by David Tabor.<\/p>\n

Tabor writes: “Six-sigma methodologies cannot bring you innovation: <\/em> an iPod, or – in their day – a Macintosh, a Lisa, or an Apple II would never happened from a “normal” company… Formulaic approaches to product design only work when you’re imitating something that a trail-blazer has already made popular… Even more profoundly, with real innovation you have to design your customer at the same time you design your product.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Tabor argues that innovation and quality can sometimes be at odds.<\/em> He goes on to say that “the longer and more detailed the product specification, the more likely a truly innovative product is to fail.” How can this be improved? Frequent feedback from target users or customers.
\nPerhaps marrying the software development concept of Agile and its rapid cycle of iterations with business process development might create an interesting combination. Continuous feedback from the customer, user or the marketplace as to the fitness and usability of the process can keep the evolution of the process on track.<\/p>\n
