Growth in global IT spending in 2012 has been anemic. \u00a0And Gartner’s forecast<\/a> for spending for 2013 predicts slow gains — up 2.5 percent to\u00a0$2.679 trillion.<\/p>\n

Gartner says that government is one sector that isn’t faring well, seeing a drop of 2 percent in 2012, and with a continued drop in spending expected in 2013. \u00a0The biggest gainer is the banking sector with expected increases of 3.5 percent in 2013.<\/p>\n

Sectors in IT that are doing better than others include the group that PWC classifies as SMAC <\/a>— social, mobile, analytics and cloud. \u00a0Gartner’s report says that “IT spending rates are expected to bottom out in 2013 and will be resilient over the long run, as business confidence is restored and the value proposition of a nexus of new technology forces \u2014 social, mobile, big data and cloud \u2014 is increasingly championed by senior leaders.”<\/p>\n

Kenneth Brant<\/a>,\u00a0Gartner research director, said that “The global economic outlook has deteriorated in 2012, leading to scant overall growth in enterprise IT spending. \u00a0However, our third-quarter outlook points to more substantial growth in 2013, if significant fiscal crises are avoided in the U.S. and Europe, and in subsequent years. Most enterprises have already significantly cut discretionary IT spending growth over the past several years and, barring a global economic catastrophe and significant contraction of operations, they have little room to reduce IT spending further over the long run.”<\/p>\n
