After years of hype, vendors may be distancing themselves from the term Services Oriented Architecture<\/a> (SOA). Instead, Enterprise 2.0<\/em> is gaining popularity. ZDNet’s Joe McKendrick is predicting <\/a>that vendors will drop the term SOA in favor of Enterprise 2.0 or Event Driven Architecture for the next wave of technology development.<\/p>\n

Many people have had a hard time getting their arms around exactly what SOA is. When vendors have to explain to businesses the usefulness of the technology with tutorials like “SOA in Plain Language<\/a>“, you sense something is not right.
\nAJAX and rich browser interface technologies formed the base for Web 2.0, and Web 2.0 applied to applications brought in a wave of ‘2.0 technologies’ that included terms like Content Management 2.0<\/a>, Learning 2.0<\/a>, Education 2.0<\/a>, and Enterprise 2.0<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now the term Enterprise 2.0 is now taking on a meaning of more than just AJAX and rich GUIs. Wikipedia defines it as:<\/p>\n

\n“Enterprise Web 2.0 is a complete business methodology that increases collaboration and access to information and people, enhances the end-user experience by embracing the latest web technologies, and takes advantage of legacy applications and data either through prepackaged applications or through composite web applications built on and with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), Business Process Management (BPM) and Application Integration.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Vendors are having a lot to do with this redefinition. At the Enterprise 2.0 conference<\/a> a few weeks back in June, Microsoft<\/a>, SAP <\/a>and IBM <\/a>all promoted the term and associated technologies.<\/p>\n
