Frank Gens<\/a>, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC, reported by RCRWireless<\/a> that “Our view is that the IT industry is in the middle of a once-every-25-year shift to a new technology platform for growth and innovation \u2013 that\u2019s built on mobile devices and applications, it\u2019s built on cloud services, it\u2019s built on big data analytics, social technologies, new industry solutions build on top of that; engaging new communities of strategic customers: consumers, small and medium businesses, emerging markets, line of business executives and so forth… \u00a0The third platform market<\/em> is finally right here in our metaphorical laps.”<\/p>\n

Gens said that<\/a> “The IT industry as a whole is moving toward the mobile\/social\/cloud\/big data world of the third platform much more quickly than many realize: from 2013 through 2020, these technologies will drive around 90% of all the growth in the IT market. \u00a0Companies that are not putting 80% or more of their competitive energy into this new market will be trapped in the legacy portion of the market, growing even slower than global GDP.”<\/p>\n

The total IT growth rate in 2013 is expected to be slightly slower than 2012: 5.7 percent versus 6.2 percent in 2012. \u00a0Mobile and cloud will be the drivers behind the bulk of the growth in the industry, accounting for 57 percent. \u00a0Mobile sales in 2013 should exceed $431 billion globally. \u00a0If the category of mobile is subtracted from the total IT growth rate, IT is growing at just 2.7 percent annually. \u00a0IDC estimates that by 2015, there will be more accesses made to the internet from mobile devices than from PCs.<\/p>\n

Small tablets are being positively received with entries including the iPad mini, a smaller versions of Amazon’s Kindle and Google’s Nexus 7. \u00a0IDC estimates that 33 percent of all tablets shipped in 2012 were in the category of screen size less than eight inches. \u00a0Small tablets are expected to make up 66 percent of the entire tablet market in 2013. \u00a0Cheaper prices are also kicking off interest by school systems where textbooks could ultimately be replaced by tablets.<\/p>\n
