The move of businesses to the cloud is occurring at a remarkable speed. \u00a0While estimates of the true cloud market size are all over the map, everyone seems to agree that we’re talking about many billions of dollars. \u00a0Forrester estimates that by 2020 the cloud will be $118 billion. \u00a0Gartner estimates $241 by 2020<\/a>, and Market Research Media will reach $270 billion<\/a> for 2020. \u00a0HP estimates<\/a> that the market size could reach $143 billion this year.<\/p>\n

John Treadway<\/a>, vice president at Cloud Technology Partners, said that<\/a> “Next year [2013] has to be the year that enterprises get serious about having real cloud operations as part and parcel of their IT operations.”<\/p>\n

Matt Murphy<\/a>, a partner at Kleiner Perkins,\u00a0said that<\/a> \u201cCompanies\u2019 comfort level and willingness to adopt the cloud is hitting an acceleration point. \u00a0Now\u2019s the most interesting time in the last 10 years to be investing in enterprise-based companies.\u201d<\/p>\n

But one of the last sticking points that need to be resolved \u00a0for many businesses before making a broader transition is the question of security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

David Small<\/a>, senior vice president and chief platform officer for Verizon Enterprise Solutions,\u00a0said that<\/a> “The race is on to protect every endpoint, every device and everything connected to the Internet. While the Internet affords us countless opportunity, it also comes with a price. No longer is strong security an option; it’s a mandatory requirement for all organizations to protect their intellectual and physical capital, customer identities and society at large.”<\/p>\n

Gartner analysts Ruggero Contu, Lawrence Pingree, and Eric Ahlm<\/a>, say that<\/a> “Increased adoption of\u00a0cloud-based computing<\/a> is expected to impact the way security is consumed as well as how key government agencies will prioritize security of public cloud infrastructure.”<\/p>\n
