While talk of the cloud, big data, mobile and business social may dominate most of the discussion of business-related technology, a new report from Software AG<\/a> suggests that Business Process Management (BPM) may, at least in the short term, be an even more valuable investment in technology for many businesses.<\/p>\n

Wolfram Jost<\/a>, CTO of Software AG,\u00a0said <\/a>that “The market will not wait. \u00a0By integrating business processes with Big Data, the cloud and both mobile and collaborative applications we are giving enterprises an uninterrupted rapid response service to changing market conditions. \u00a0The real-time data, rapid scalability and fast decision making enabled by these technologies are of little use if companies still take months or years to implement business process change.”<\/p>\n

The report asked business leaders which technologies can provide them the greatest business opportunity in the upcoming year. \u00a020 percent of them said Big Data and collaborative work processes would help them. \u00a030 percent identified the cloud and mobile applications. \u00a0But over 40 percent of them said that BPM was the most important technology for them.<\/p>\n

But it’s really not as simple as selecting just one of these new technologies and ignoring the others. \u00a0 Technologies are converging and causing technologies like BPM to be redefined. \u00a0BPM has been the technology used to re-engineer businesses, now new technologies are re-engineering BPM.<\/p>\n

Clay Richardson<\/a>, analyst at Forrester Research, sees Big Data and the Cloud as the data source and vehicle for driving the re-engineering of BPM. \u00a0Forrester is calling the trend<\/a> “Big Process”. \u00a0Richardson said that \u00a0“in order to improve customer experience, business and IT leaders must first mine oceans of operational data to pinpoint exactly what must be done to improve the customer experience and underlying business processes… \u00a0Even for organizations that might not be focused on big data quite yet, there is still the need to begin thinking from a big process perspective to better understand the relationships and impacts between operational data and business process performance.”<\/p>\n
