It comes as no surprise, but by far the most active users of Social Media are aged 18-29. \u00a0A survey by Pew<\/a> found that 86 percent of people in that age group actively use Social Media. \u00a0The report found that 67 percent of adult who are regularly online are also social media users. \u00a0More women than men are users; 71 percent to 62 percent.<\/p>\n

The Pew report found that Facebook still dominates the world of Social Media, but all is not rosy for Facebook. \u00a0A fair number of Facebook users are reporting burn out from their Social Media addiction. \u00a0 20 percent of people who are active online but don’t have a Facebook presence say that they did at one point but simply dropped it. \u00a0Many feel that Social Media has begun to hijack way too much of their time. \u00a0As many as 61 percent of current Facebook users say that at some point that they’ve taken a several week vacation from using the site. \u00a021 percent said they are just too busy with other things to continue to devote so much time to it, ten percent said that they’ve become bored with it, and another ten percent said that part of the reason for their break was that they felt the content on Facebook was just getting ‘stale’.<\/p>\n

A report by GlobalWebIndex<\/a> also finds that Facebook may be slipping in popularity to Google+. \u00a0That report estimates that there are now roughly 903 million Facebook accounts, compared to 343 million for Google+. \u00a0Google+ now ranks as the second most popular Social Media option.<\/p>\n

Others find not being part of Facebook is a bit of a way to rebel against the norm and assert themselves as being different. \u00a0Laura Portwood-Stacer<\/a>, New York University assistant professor<\/a>, wrote <\/a>that “Many Facebook refusers actually revel in their difference from the mainstream, seeing it as a mark of distinction, superior taste, and identification with an elite social stratum. This is consistent with Krcmar’s finding that families who chose not to consume television ‘share a belief that they were iconoclasts, and for the most part, they relished that role… Quitting is a limited tactic for those who would strategize against Facebook and other hegemons of media culture.”<\/p>\n
