Data: Making the Federal Government More Efficient

The application of Big Data to improve the workings of the federal government could potentially reduce spending by as much as 10 percent, say 83 percent of federal IT managers in a survey taken by TechAmerica and sponsored by SAP. That would equate to about $380 billion, given today’s federal spending levels.

Areas where federal IT managers see where Big Data could result in savings and process improvements include:

Reduce wasteful spending. Big Data analytics can be used as a tool to identify wasteful spending, with the potential of reducing the federal budget by 10 percent.

Better healthcare. Big Data could be used to identify patterns that lead to better detection of the outbreak of disease and more effective healthcare treatments.

Crime reduction and better public safety. Big data analytics can be used to develop models that can predict areas of higher likelihood of crime.

Better quality of life. Big data could enable government, for example, to provide more personalized services.

Agencies within the government that deal with huge volumes of unstructured data are those most likely to benefit from the use of Big Data analytics. Possible applications include NASA analysis of telemetry data, the National Weather Service weather data, and Homeland Security bio-preparedness data.

Jennifer Morgan, president of SAP Public Services, <a data’ and gain a much clearer picture of how to save taxpayer dollars and even save lives. Practical concerns such as costs, consumer privacy, and return on investment must be addressed carefully so that we can gain the enormous benefits of using Big Data tools.”

<a class="lightsocial_a"
