Big Data has become a hot topic not only in tech journals and magazines, it’s also a topic that’s been picked up and heavily covered by the popular media, for example, it’s a frequent topic in the Wall Street Journal<\/a>, Forbes <\/a>and the New York Times<\/a>. \u00a0The Wall Street Journal, says that Big Data is not just the purview of “companies that already deal in information”, like Amazon, Google and Facebook, but it is something that is being employed across a variety of industry segments, like Caesars Entertainment for HR, Ford Motor and Zynga for Product Development, United Parcel for Operations, and Intercontinental hotels for Marketing.<\/p>\n

Many of these articles leave the impression that Big Data is something that is widely used and has already found its way into many or most organizations.<\/p>\n

But a recent survey by SAS finds that the perception that there are large numbers of businesses already using Big Data isn’t accurate. \u00a0The SAS survey<\/a> found that just 12 percent of organizations have been able to use Big Data analytics as part of their daily operations. \u00a0And only 14 percent said that it is very likely that they will take on Big Data projects by 2014.<\/p>\n
