One would expect that an Engineering Enterprise Content Management\u00a0ECM<\/a> system\u00a0would be used to store engineering documents.\u00a0 And of course it does.\u00a0\u00a0An engineering repository for electronic documents is agnostic to the authoring application and the electronic file format that data is stored in.\u00a0 Any kind of engineering data can be stored: AutoDesk’s AutoCAD<\/a>, PTC’s Pro\/Engineer<\/a>, AutoDesk’s Inventor<\/a>, CATIA<\/a>, SolidWorks<\/a>, Unigraphics<\/a>, Lattice3d<\/a>, or\u00a0CoCreate<\/a> — none of these present a problem.\u00a0\u00a0Data stored from these applications\u00a0can slice and dice any size and shape of 2D or 3D model.<\/p>\n

But the ‘E’ of ECM is for ‘Enterprise’.\u00a0 Engineering ECM systems can provide the infrastructure for sharing engineering departments to other organizations of the enterprise.\u00a0\u00a0Standard\u00a0engineering documents\u00a0define and specify such things\u00a0like geometric relationships\u00a0and finite element models, but an engineering ECM system allows much more in the way of documentation and support information\u00a0that can\u00a0be captured and stored.<\/p>\n

Consider the requirements, specifications, preliminary designs\u00a0and process descriptions.\u00a0 There are memos, email, notes and correspondence between not only engineers, but also with members\u00a0of the sales, marketing, quality assurance, manufacturing\u00a0and services teams.\u00a0 All of this information can and should be stored within the central repository.\u00a0 A clear benefit of Engineering ECM is that\u00a0the central knowledge repository saves time in locating and researching information, it can provide background information that can better communicate designs, it provides\u00a0the context for the thought process that went into the design, and it helps in making better design decisions.<\/p>\n

Engineering is only one prong of\u00a0the total\u00a0business operation, and all too often the\u00a0engineering “jewels” of the company remain isolated within engineering.\u00a0 Engineering ECM changes that.\u00a0 Not only can the engineering ECM system provide secure enterprise-wide access to documents across all departments, but an engineering ECM system can let all business unit members view and collaborate on engineering designs and processes.<\/p>\n
