SOA and Microsoft’s .Net are not mutually exclusive things, but the long-term success of SOA may become a threat to .Net. A recent survey by Evans Data<\/a> found that the number of developers using Java to implement SOA has grown to the point where the two camps are nearly equal in size.<\/p>\n

The findings are based on a survey of more than 400 developers working on Web Services projects. Compared to a survey taken six months previous, the number <\/a>of developers implementing SOA using Microsoft’s .Net has shrunk by about 20 percent. .Net still holds a lead with about 31 percent of the developers, but Java was just behind with 28 percent. About 20 percent of companies are supporting both technologies.<\/p>\n

The report cited one reason for the migration towards Java was the activity happening with the Java IDE Eclipse. Another factor is that the number of Open Source SOA-based projects has increased, and nearly all of them are Java-based. The combination of Java with Open Source looks like it will become a major challenger to Microsoft.<\/p>\n

70 percent of those responding found that the cost savings possible with SOA technology was a major reason behind their current project with code reuse and automation being the main reasons for the savings. Testing and validation of Web Services was cited as one of the major challenges for SOA projects.<\/p>\n
