ComputerWorld <\/a>in the UK is reporting that disk storage costs have dropped by a third over the past year. One gigabyte cost $1.28 one year ago. Now one gigabyte sells for $.86. Year on year sales of hard disk drives are increasing by 90% with year on year value increasing by 50%.<\/p>\n

The increased popularly of laptops outfitted with high-capacity drives is fueling the expansion. More than half of new sales are now for drives of greater than 300 Gigabyte capacity, up from under 20% of the market in 2006.<\/p>\n

The Compact Disk is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this month. CDs hold about 650 Magabytes of data. DVD hold about 7 times that. And newer hgher density CDs are expected to be introduced in the next year or two with 25 Gigabyte capacities. Progress, but storage capacity increases aren’t keeping up with the growth of data.<\/p>\n

IBM’s toxic terabyte prediction <\/a>was that by 2011 the world’s information will double in size every eleven hours. Storage costs are indeed dropping quickly, but will new capacity ever be able to keep up with that kind of demand?<\/p>\n
