Andrew Rose<\/a>, principal analyst at\u00a0Forrester, wrote on his blog<\/a> that “CISOs can\u2019t afford to remain where they are; they need to decide whether they want to move up or down… \u00a0The\u00a0‘next-gen’ CISOs are commonly savvy business professionals, experienced at implementing change and evolving processes, and adept at dealing with strategies, resource plans and board-level discussions… \u00a0CISOs wanting to move up will also have to fall out of love with the thrill of firefighting and other tactical aspects of security operations… \u00a0Any CISO who chooses to pursue the top position should start building their business skills now, broadening their focus beyond IT security and building a support team.”<\/p>\n

Rose asserts that the role of the CISO needs to change with the needs of the business. \u00a0The CISO role has been one of a defender of information. \u00a0In the future the CISO needs to be more of a risk assessment advisor. \u00a0Rose lists the top priorities that CISO’s in today’s world are working with, versus how CISO priorities will be changed by 2018:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Paul Proctor<\/a>, chief of security and risk management research at Gartner, defined the role of CISO<\/a> as one that has “a\u00a0past that demonstrates adaptability, a present that challenges, and a future that defies any reasonable expectation of managed risk. \u00a0What we\u2019ve learned from the past is that our profession has always had to adapt \u2013 and we have.\u201d<\/div>\n
