The High Performance Computing (HPC) market grew by 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2013 to reach $2.5 billion, up from $2.4 billion in 2012. \u00a0Shipments of HPC computers came in at 33,511 units in the first quarter, up 16.4 percent from the previous year’s first quarter.<\/p>\n

IDC’s report on the HPC market <\/a>attributed the growth to increased sales in departmental, divisional and workgroup segments.<\/p>\n

Earl Joseph<\/a>, IDC analyst, said that<\/a> “Supercomputer revenues actually accelerated during the global economic downturn, driven by the growing recognition of the crucial role these systems play in economic competitiveness as well as scientific progress… \u00a0The most surprising finding of the 2013 study is the substantially increased penetration of co-processors and accelerators at HPC sites around the world, along with the large proportion of sites that are applying Big Data technologies and methods to their problems.” \u00a0IDC expects that governments and large businesses around the world to have a high demand for HPC machines throughout at least the end of 2013.<\/p>\n

According to IDC’s report on performance computing<\/a>, “data-driven businesses with a constant thirst for storing and analysing large quantities of data will force suppliers to develop big data\u2013friendly solutions \u2014 solutions that are designed to minimize the movement of data and at the same time provide the economies of scale needed to store this data at the cost of pennies per gigabyte.”<\/p>\n

The leading vendors in the HPC market are HP and IBM, each with about 31 percent of the market share. \u00a0Dell ranks in third place with about 14 percent.<\/p>\n
