Much the same way that the Universe is ever expanding, so too are some companies in their campaign to push the envelope of IT.\u00a0 Sun is calling it the ‘red shift’<\/a>.\u00a0 Companies that don’t have exploding processing requirements are called ‘blue-shift’ companies.\u00a0 The terms red-shift and blue-shift come from astronomy and refer to a technique used to demonstrate that the universe is ever expanding.<\/p>\n

Examples of ‘red-shift’ companies are Google, Amazon S3, YouTube, FaceBook, MySpace, and Twitter.\u00a0 Newer Web-facing applications that are experiencing phenomenal growth over just weeks tend to head up the red-shift pack, while companies that have more traditional back-end systems are growing at historical rates and form the majority of companies among the blue-shift.<\/p>\n

Sun is predicting that those red-shift companies that are pushing IT to the maximum will be able to grow exponentially, while those that do not can expect at most to keep current with\u00a0the rate of GDP growth.<\/p>\n

To get the most for their money, ‘red-shift’ companies will adopt low-cost utility computing solutions based around ‘big iron’ servers.\u00a0 That’s, of course, where Sun is hoping to help out the red-shift companies.\u00a0 It’s an interesting theory,\u00a0although somewhat\u00a0self-serving for Sun.<\/p>\n
