Since the first release of the iPad<\/a> in April 2010, the tablet market has exploded with what Forrester Research<\/a> calls “hyper-growth”. Forrester predicts<\/a> that between 2012 and 2017 that tablets will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 25.6 percent. \u00a0Forrester notes that tablet-based collaboration <\/em>applications will power much of the coming growth in the tablet market.<\/p>\n

Currently there are about 300 million tablets in use worldwide, of which Apple’s iPad accounts for about half. \u00a0Forrester expects that within five years, the worldwide installed base will triple. \u00a0They expect 381 million tablets to be sold in 2017. \u00a0In 2017, about 60 percent of all North Americans will own a tablet. \u00a0Forrester calls the tablet market one of the most successful branches of today’s computer market.<\/p>\n

JP Gowender<\/a>, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Forrester Research, said that “Both company-issued and bring-your-own (BYO) tablets will become pervasive in workplaces in developed countries or dynamic regions of developing countries (for example, urban China).”<\/div>\n

An IDG Global Solutions<\/a> survey <\/a>found that in North America about one in three use their tablets for work, and in Asia, the number is closer to 60 percent. \u00a0The report found that tablets are especially popular with healthcare workers, executives, and business roles that require extensive travel — they expect to see continued double-digit growth in sales to these types of users.<\/div>\n
