{"id":4025,"date":"2013-09-17T07:00:34","date_gmt":"2013-09-17T15:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=4025"},"modified":"2013-09-17T07:00:34","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T15:00:34","slug":"federal-it-seeking-innovation-from-the-software-defined-enterprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/federal-it-seeking-innovation-from-the-software-defined-enterprise\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal IT: Seeking Innovation from the Software-Defined Enterprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Federal IT is severely constrained by their existing IT environment, making it difficult to innovate. \u00a0$62 billion &#8212; 79 percent &#8212; of Federal IT budgets is spent updating and maintaining legacy IT systems. \u00a0<a title=\"MeriTalk Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.meritalk.com\/software-defined-data-center-register.php\" target=\"_blank\">A report by MeriTalk<\/a> concludes that this current model is &#8216;unsustainable&#8217;. \u00a0IT is bogged down by tight budgets, security worries, agency politics, complex procurement, and existing legacy vendor contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The breakdown of the 79 percent spending on legacy operations is as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>29 percent<\/strong> on legacy data center hardware and software<\/li>\n<li><strong>25 percent<\/strong> on traditional storage environments<\/li>\n<li><strong>25 percent<\/strong> on legacy enterprise networks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Lynn Martin bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.govconwire.com\/2013\/07\/lynn-martin-appointed-vmware-public-sector-group-head\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lynn Martin<\/a>, Vice President at VMware, said that &#8220;with current budget constraints and continued demand for new and better services, we need to transform the current ratio of maintenance to innovation in Federal IT.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>81 percent of federal agency IT groups said that innovation is vital to their future and 66 percent thought that moving to a software-defined enterprise could ease many of their current woes. \u00a0For example, 53 percent of federal IT groups said that a software-defined data center will help them reduce costs. \u00a041 percent said that it should improve performance too.<\/p>\n<div>To improve operational efficiency, many organizations are already transitioning to a more software-defined IT infrastructure:<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>66 percent<\/strong> are adopting <em>software-defined<\/em> data centers<\/li>\n<li><strong>59 percent<\/strong> are adopting<em> software-defined<\/em> storage<\/li>\n<li><strong>55 percent<\/strong> are adopting <em>software-defined<\/em> networking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><a title=\"Steve o'Keeffe bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/pub\/steve-o-keeffe\/6\/1a7\/26\/\" target=\"_blank\">Steve O&#8217;Keeffe<\/a>, founder of MeriTalk, said that \u201ctechnology is changing faster than our ability to manage it \u2013 and definitely faster than physical equipment can keep up. \u00a0Software-defined data centers will enable government to create and deploy newer, better, faster applications, without replacing infrastructure. We are freeing IT from IT.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
