$47.4 billion will be spent on global public IT cloud services in 2013, and that is expected to top $107 billion in 2017, growing at an annual rate of about 23.5 percent, according to IT research firm IDC<\/a>. Today 56.9 percent of clout IT spending is happening in the US, although that’s expected to drop to 43.9 percent in 2017.<\/p>\n

Frank Gens<\/a>, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC, said that “the first wave<\/em> of cloud services adoption was focused on improving the efficiency of the IT department. Over the next several years, the primary driver for cloud adoption will shift from economics to innovation as leading-edge companies invest in cloud services as the foundation for new competitive offerings. The emergence of cloud as the core for new ‘business-as-a-service’ offerings will accelerate cloud adoption and dramatically raise the cloud model’s strategic value beyond CIOs to CXOs of all types… In the second phase<\/em> of cloud development, it will be essential for cloud services providers to re-examine their cloud strategies, preparing for a marketplace focused intensely on business innovation, industry transformation and increasingly pressured pricing and operating models. How suppliers navigate the next two years will tell us a lot about who the IT market leaders will be for the next two decades.”<\/p>\n

What’s fueling the growth of the cloud? While it can’t be pinpointed to any one thing, the IDC report finds that business innovation is a big driver, accounting for nearly 17 percent of the spending and about half the growth across all the cloud computing segments that IDC tracks.<\/p>\n
