Shipments of desktop PCs are expected to touch 134.4 million units by 2013 and 123.11 million by 2017, while, that of portable PCs are expected at 180.9 million units by 2013 and 196.6 million by 2017. By 2017, 87 percent of connected device sales will be tablets and smartphones. But within that mix of smart devices, there is a new category which is growing and has been identified by research firm IDC<\/a> as the ‘phablet’.<\/p>\n

Phablets are basically smartphone-tablet hybrids with screen sizes larger than 5 inches and smaller than 7. At that size range, they fall in between the markets for smart phones and tablets. IDC estimates that phablets will cannibalize the tablet market in the next 12 to 18 months.<\/p>\n

Bob O’Donnell<\/a>, IDC vice president, said that “the device world has seen several iterations of cannibalization impacting different categories, with the last few years focused on tablets cannibalising PC sales. Over the next 12-18 months, however, we believe the larger smartphones, commonly called phablets, will start to eat into the smaller-size tablet market, contributing to a slower growth rate for tablets.”<\/p>\n

Much of the on-going growth in the overall mobile device market is due to phablets. Tablet sales have actually decreased during the first half of 2013 and laptop growth has been flat.<\/p>\n
